Leg Lengthening

Leg lengthening is an orthopedic surgical procedure used to increase height or correct differences in limb length.

The procedure is based on the principle of distraction osteogenesis - controlled bone separation during which new bone tissue forms between bone fragments.

In our clinic, we use the most effective and safest treatment option - the Ilizarov method and modern intramedullary nails.

The procedure is most commonly applied in people with leg length discrepancy, short stature, or for aesthetic purposes in patients who want to be taller.

Lengthening is done gradually - around 1 mm per day, which gives the body time to form quality bone tissue.

The entire process, including bone consolidation, lasts between 6 and 12 months. In one stage, it is possible to lengthen the legs by 5 to 8 cm.

At Medical Time hospital, every procedure is planned individually. The operation is performed by Specialist Dr. Artemiev Alexander, who has extensive experience in this field.

Who are candidates for leg lengthening?

Leg lengthening is most often performed for aesthetic reasons - in patients who want to increase their height. This group includes patients between 18 and 65 years old.

Surprisingly, the initial height of these patients can be quite high. We have seen people with an initial height of 170, 180, and even 190 centimeters.

The second group includes patients with congenital disorders whose main symptom is short stature, such as achondroplasia.

The procedure is also intended for patients with differences in leg length caused by congenital conditions, severe injuries, and surgeries.

If there are associated deformities, it is possible to lengthen the leg and correct the deformity at the same time.

Exceptional results have been recorded, for example patients with a shortening of the left tibia by 6 cm, or patients who increased their height from 190 cm to 196 cm.

What does the leg lengthening procedure look like?

The operation is performed under epidural anesthesia and usually lasts 1 to 3 hours, depending on the number of segments.

The surgeon makes a controlled bone cut (osteotomy) and places a distraction device, i.e. the Ilizarov frame.

During the latent phase of 5 to 7 days, the bone starts healing and prepares for distraction.

Then follows the active lengthening phase - the patient or doctor activates the device that separates the fragments by 1 mm per day.

After reaching the desired length, the consolidation phase begins, in which the new bone tissue matures and strengthens.

The tibial lengthening scheme using the Ilizarov frame provides high precision and safety of the process.

The Medical Time team follows the patient at every step through regular examinations and X-ray controls.

Recovery and rehabilitation

Recovery after leg lengthening requires patience and dedication - the process lasts from 6 to 12 months.

During the distraction phase, the patient uses crutches with additional support aids for postoperative mobilization, but walking is possible and recommended.

Physical therapy maintains range of motion, prevents contractures, and builds muscle mass.

Pain is present at the beginning, but it is controlled with analgesic therapy as recommended by the doctor.

After bone consolidation, the device is removed with a second smaller operation.

Return to light activities is possible after 3 to 4 months, and to full physical activity after consolidation is complete.

The Medical Time medical team provides full monitoring and support throughout the entire treatment period.
